Portland Loves Bicyclists

December 17, 2008

I really like this documentary about how Portland has transformed itself into a more bike and people friendly (opposed to car friendly) city. It’s a little heavy on the city planning details in the middle, but make sure to catch the elderly bike project towards the end of the video. The frequent rain and micro brew insanity notwithstanding, is there anything not to like about this city?

The Green Microgym

September 15, 2008

Yet another reason to move to Portland (if you can get past the weather and microbrew insanity), the new Green Microgym is powered by the people exercising in it. Um, how has no one thought of this already?

[Owner Adam Boesel] helped to rig up the gyms spin bikes with weedwacker motors and truck alternators to provide juice to the gym’s systems. The gym will also use solar power to offer the remainder of its electricity needed. It even uses energy-efficient treadmill motors, specially ordered.
